MANILA - Design icon Aureo Alonzo died Monday morning due to pneumonia and kidney failure, according to a relative. He was 84.
Alonzo passed away at 9:55 a.m. at Makati Medical Center, his nephew Jojo Villaflor told ABS-CBN News.
The veteran designer had been undergoing dialysis three times a week before he succumbed to pneumonia, according to Villaflor.
Alonzo's wake will be held at Manila Memorial Park in Paranaque starting early Tuesday.
The only Filipino designer to win the prestigious Camel Award, Villaflor was known for his beaded gowns, terno and devotion to the Virgin Mary, which also showed in his designs.
Over the years since the 1970s, Alonzo had been credited for helping jump-start careers of aspiring models. His designs were famously worn by beauty queens and female political figures, among others. -- Report by Mario Dumaual, ABS-CBN News
