MANILA, Philippines – A player of the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles is one of the two new recruits who are expected to win girls’ hearts as the 88th season of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines starts next week.
Chalk magazine hailed Kris Porter, 17, as a look-alike of American actor Tom Cruise, citing his “iridescent, almost Old Hollywood features.”
“At 6’4, Kris Porter is quite the looker. He reminds us of a young Tom Cruise and his character, the reckless pilot Maverick, in his breakthrough film ‘Top Gun,’” the magazine said.
Porter appears on the cover of Chalk’s July 2012 issue with Gabby Reyes of the De La Salle Green Archers.
In the cover story of the magazine, the Business Management student of Ateneo admits to being a “cool” older brother but a “protective” boyfriend.
“Ang gusto ko sa babae ‘yung mabait, matangkad, maganda at matalino,” he said, referring to his girlfriend Danica.
Porter, who grew up in Cebu, said he has yet to get used to living in Manila. “Of course, there was the language barrier – like, people would say ‘tray-si-kel’ but I would pronounce it as ‘tray-si-kol,’ which is very Bisaya,” he said.
‘Married to basketball’
Unlike Porter who is committed to his girlfriend, La Salle’s Reyes is married – to basketball.
“I’ve got no time,” he said about entering into a relationship. “I’m open, but I feel like I’m going to end up disappointing anyone I date because of how my hectic my life is.”
"Right now, I want to make a name for myself in college ball. I just want to chew the lights out. I want to kill 'em, man!" he added.
Now 18, Reyes is more determined, sacrificing his social life “for the love of the game.”
He was quick to stress, however, that his grades will never be compromised. “I’d even like to say basketball comes first, but my studies do,” he said.
