MANILA -- The company behind Kulinarya Kitchen has opened the latest branch of its restaurant KXP at the bustling Commerce Center in Filinvest, Alabang with the aim of “redefining the fast casual restaurant scene in Metro Manila.”

KXP, which can also be found at Rockwell Business Center along Ortigas Avenue in Pasig, suits the laid-back vibe of the south with an extensive menu for quick office lunches, as well as platters for family or group dining.

Appetizers include the specialty Seafood Salad Maki (P220), a playful take on the maki and kani salad. It combines both by marrying the pleasing flavors of a shrimp and kani salad and the umami notes of the nori, and to please those maki lovers, punctuating it with ebiko, mango coulis, wasabi and a soy-balsamic vinaigrette.

For those looking for finger food, the Sriracha Chicken Poppers (P195) will surely please, with crispy fried chicken pieces coated with a tangy zingy hot pepper sauce with ranch dressing. You can have it on its own or with a cup of rice (P150).

Another option would be the Hot Cheese Nacho Dip (P285), a basket of nachos and a sizzling pot of melted cheeses and pulled roast beef to dip in.

The menu also offers sandwiches and burgers. The Steak Burger (P175) is a steal for its price, with the Angus beef patty, dripping juices on its sesame seed bun with grilled American cheddar, special KXP sauce, and all the usual burger vegetable trimmings.

A selection of pastas and pizzas are also on offer. New offerings such as the Carbonara with Truffled Egg and Pancetta (P295) and Cheesy Mac and Roast Beef (P295) were impressive as they were both big servings and very comforting.

The Carbonara with Truffled Egg and Pancetta, in particular, was very successful in giving us a well balanced and yummy take on the pasta favorite.

Personal thin crust pizza can be had in seven varieties with flavors such as Cheese and Garlic (P100), or interesting flavors such as Longganisa at Kesong Puti (P135) and Tex Mex (P160).

Family-style dining in KXP includes platters good for two to four persons, with two sidings and buttered vegetables. Group diners can have their choice between the Grilled Steak Platter (P995) or Surf and Turf (P995).

The steak platter includes a 400-gram US top blade steak served with a meaty red wine sauce, while the surf and turf platter includes tender roast beef in the same wine sauce, and a dish of baked shrimps cooked ala thermidore in cream, cheese and bell peppers.

With about eight sidings to choose from, choose the “dirty rice,” fried rice cooked in the meat’s drippings.

For dessert, the Chocolate Pots au Crème (P75) is a delightful finish to any meal. With creamy and rich chocolate and just the right sweetness, it is served with a dollop of crème and a few pieces of petite fours on the side.

Enjoy this with a cup of brewed coffee or hot tea or continue on with a few beers, wine or even cocktails like the Apple-Lychee Mojito, Iced Tea Mojito and the Sangria (P195). The last is my fruity favorite, and can be enjoyed by the glass or by the carafe (P360).
