MANILA, Philippines - The gowns of the Aquino sisters and the barong Tagalog of President-elect Benigno Aquino III are now being readied for the inauguration on June 30.

The sketch of the design of one of the barong Tagalogs being made by designer Paul Cabral for president-elect Benigno Aquino III.

Renowned fashion designer Paul Cabral was excited as he showed the Filipiniana gowns he designed that the Aquino sisters - Ballsy, Pinky and Viel - will use for their brother’s inauguration.

"Pagka si Ballsy at si Viel, ang gusto nila ang fitting nila is medyo straight lang, medyo maluwag... si Pinky naman, gusto niya medyo naka-shape nang kaunti... (si Kris) siyempre shaped na shaped," Cabral said.

But since the gowns are not yet finished, Cabral only allowed cameras to film the embroidery of the gowns.

The gowns are made of piña with an embroidered panuelo and tapis.

Cabral said even if the family is still mourning the death of former president Corazon Aquino, he was able to convince the sisters to wear yellow instead of black.

Designing the gowns was a challenge for Cabral. He said they had to be similar in design, but unique as well.

Cabral used piña-silk for president-elect Aquino’s barong Tagalog.

He made two designs: one features rice, a symbol of life and prosperity; the other, bamboo, a symbol of Aquino’s personality.

"Ang bamboo 'di ba, matibay siya, pero flexible. 'Yun bang alam mo na maski presidente siya, puwede siyang bumaba sa mga tao," he said.

While Aquino has not yet chosen which of the two barongs he will wear, Cabral said both of them reflect the dignity of the Office of the President.

He added the clothes for the inauguration he designed for the Aquinos will be simple yet elegant. Jing Castañeda, ABS-CBN News
