MANILA, Philippines – Expect members of the Philippine contingent in the 2012 London Olympics to wear Rajo Laurel’s creations during the opening ceremonies in August.
Laurel, one of the country’s top designers, made the announcement on his blog on fashion website StyleBible on Tuesday.
“I can’t tell you how big of an honor this is for me!” he wrote.
Laurel also posted sketches of his designs for the 30-member contingent, saying that these are inspired by the barong Tagalog.
He added his own twist to the Philippines’ national costume by using the colors black, gold and mocha. He also included “palay” embroidery to the barong Tagalog to symbolize good fortune.
“The palay [embroidery] is a symbolism that I hope will help them, will bring them good luck [in the Olympics],” the designer told ANC.
The outfit is accessorized by a “salakot” or a Filipino wide-brimmed hat, which Laurel designed with gold leaves.
“We have a very small delegation so we wanted something that would stick out,” he explained.
Just last month, former supermodel Tyra Banks wore one of Laurel’s creations for the season finale of “America’s Next Top Model.”
