1. Schindler’s List
Schindler’s List has captured the hearts of many because it poignantly paints a picture of the reality of history’s bloodiest war. Oskar Schindler is a greedy German businessman who exploited cheap Jewish labor for his factory. Later on he developed compassion for the Jews after discovering that he can save them from concentration camps. After the war, he ended up penniless but saved 1,000 Polish Jews from the hands of the Nazis. This movie, directed by Steven Spielberg, won 7 Oscars, including Best Picture. Liam Neeson stars as Oskar Schindler.
2. The Pianist
“Music is his passion, surviving is his masterpiece,” are words that clearly describe Wladyslaw Spilman, the greatest piano player in all of Poland. During the war, he was separated from his family. Playing the piano paved the way for his survival during the bloodiest time in history. Adrien Brody won an Oscar for Best Actor for playing the title role.
3. Saving Private Ryan
A woman received word that her 3 sons have been killed in battle. Gen. Marshall then sent Capt. John Miller together with 8 men on a rescue mission to save the woman's fourth and last surviving son, Private James Ryan. Capt. Miller became half-hearted in pursuing the operation when his men got killed during the mission. At the end of the day, the question is, “When is one's life more important than others?” The film won 5 Oscars, including a Best Director Award for Steven Spielberg.
4. The Diary of Anne Frank
Who could forget Anne Frank and the secret annex where she, her family, and some other Jewish families lived during WWII? In her diary, we witness how she blossomed from a young girl to a young lady during wartime. In spite of the harsh conditions, she still tried to live a normal life. Her story continues to serve as an inspiration to teenagers. Her story has been made into a number of made-for-TV series.
5. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Holocaust is seen through the eyes of an 8-year-old boy, Bruno, who is the son of an SS Commandant. Without realizing the complications, he develops a friendship with a Jew named Shmuel. This fictional story shows the horror of death that faced millions of people during the war. The movie is based on the best-selling novel by John Boyne.
Operation Valkyrie is only one of the many attempts to destroy Hitler that never succeeded. The film lets us look into the life of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (based on a true to life story), and shows us how being a traitor becomes a heroic deed. Tom Cruise plays the lead role.
