MANILA -- TV actress and singer Agot Isidro is making her theater comeback with the straight drama "Rabbit Hole," which will open the second season of theater company Red Turnip.
The last time Isidro performed in a theater production was in the original Filipino musical "Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah" for Tanghalang Pilipino seven years ago.
During the press conference for "Rabbit Hole" on Monday, Isidro revealed that she could have made her theater comeback earlier since Red Turnip offered her a part in Patrick Marber's "Closer," which marked the company's debut in October last year.
However, Isidro said she had to pass on the role because of her busy schedule.
But when she got invited again to do a reading for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize winning play, she didn't hesitate anymore and eventually bagged the lead role of Becca Corbett, which earned for Nicole Kidman a best actress Oscar nomination for her performances the 2010 movie version.
“I love to challenge myself,” Isidro said on why she took on the role.
Isidro also said she can relate to the character of Becca who lost her four-year-old son to a car accident, citing her own experience when she lost her father, aunt and a friend.
In the play written by David Lindsay-Abaire, Becca deals with her son's death, which threatens to tear her marriage apart.
Theater veteran Michael Williams plays Isidro's husband in the play, which required from the singer-actress "an intense emotional examination of grief that is intertwined with honesty, compassion, insightfulness and wit."
Joining Isidro and Williams in "Rabbit Hole" are Che Ramos-Cosio as Becca’s sister Izzy; Sheila Francisco as their mother Nat; and Ross Pesigan as the young boy responsible for the tragic loss of Becca's son.
"Rabbit Hole" also marks the directorial debut of theater actor Topper Fabregas.
The play opens on August 1 and will run all weekends for the entire month at Whitespace on Pasong Tamo Extension in Makati City.
