MANILA-- Department of Science and Technology Secretary (DOST) Mario G. Montejo was named most distinguished alumnus by the University of the Philippines Alumni Association (UPAA) for 2014.

The UPAA announced Monday the choices for this year’s UPAA distinguished alumni awardees, who will be recognized at the UP general alumni-faculty homecoming and reunion on June 21 at the Bahay ng Alumni.

The UPAA awards are conferred on alumni who have demonstrated in their chosen fields of endeavor, extraordinary achievements and excellent contributions that bring about substantial benefits to the society and distinct honor to UP.

“As what we have been doing the past few years, the UPAA makes a special effort to identify unsung alumni achievers -- those whose accomplishments in little-known corners of the country are remarkable but have remained unheralded and unrecognized,” said Ponciano Rivera, UPAA president.

The UPAA called Montejo "a gifted multi-awarded engineer and inventor with a long list of technological innovations."

"Under his leadership, DOST, in partnership with colleges and universities and other organizations, has reshaped its policies and programs to address national problems, develop appropriate technologies, improve industry competitiveness and enhance delivery of social services," it added.

Three alumni are also being recognized for lifetime achievement: Dr. Manuel S. Alba, Engr. Claudio B. Altura, and Dr. Jesusa Bagan-Lara.

Other alumni awardees for outstanding achievements in various fields include: ABS-CBN's Ma. Regina E. Reyes for communication; Ivan Anthony S. Henares for culture and the arts, Dr. Alfredo Mahar Francisco A. Lagmay for disaster mitigation; Rep. Isagani S. Amatong for good governance; Solicitor General Francis H. Jardeleza for law and judiciary; and Amb. Virghilio A. Reyes, Jr., for public service.

The three UPAA distinguished service awardees are Dr. Mimosa Cortez-Ocampo, Dr. Eric S.M. Talens, and the U.P. Singing Ambassadors, founded and conducted by Prof. Edgardo L. Manguiat.

The UPAA Hong Kong Chapter will receive this year’s UPAA distinguished service award for an alumni chapter.

The eight families who will receive the UPAA multi-generation UP alumni family awards are the families of Fernando S. Algas, Basil H. Jajurie, Cayetano-Lardizabal, Germar, Jose P. Laurel, Generoso-Jocson, Tillah-Rasul-Bernardo and Jose Jesus A. Vergara.
