MANILA, Philippines - If there is anything in Boracay that can compete with the nice view of its white beach, it's the wide selection of places to eat.

Aside from the restaurants in hotels, there are other places that are worth checking out.

If you feel like having Spanish cuisine while enjoying the sea, sand and sun, then head to Station 3 where Dos Mestizos is located.

Owned by respected restaurateur Binggoy Remedios, Dos Mestizos is recommended by most guidebooks as one of the must-visit restaurants on the island.

Binggoy's nephew, Andre Malarky who is Dos Mestizos' resident Chef and General Manager, said the restaurant has been the epicenter for authentic Spanish cuisine in the island.

"Dos Mestizos serves traditional Spanish food. Most of the dishes we offer here are family heirloom recipes," Chef Andre said.

The Canada-raised chef, who decided to stay in Boracay for the last 3 years, said their restaurant's recipes have been passed down from family to family.

Dos Mestizos boasts of their best sellers which include Paella Negra and Paella Valenciana.

And yes, their paella is indeed sumptuous, along with my personal favorites, Gambas Al Ajillo (shrimps sauteed in olive oil and garlic) and Salpicao De Vaca.

Since I don't eat pork, beef is automatically my choice of meat, and this one which Dos Mestizos serves is oh so tender.

The restaurant recently opened its deli and bread shop. Chef Andre said he personally bakes the breads and even makes Spanish sausages called Chorizo Hecho Por Dos Mestizos.

Though you can't see the sunset because the restaurant is located deep inside Station 3, checking it out is worth the effort as you won't just satisfy your craving for Spanish food, you'll also get a cozy feeling.

Make sure, though, that as you try their specialties, pair it with their wide array of imported wines or better yet, go there on a Saturday to enjoy their tapas buffet.

Dos Mestizos is located at Station 3, Remedios Street, Sitio Manggayad, Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan, 5608. Tel Nos. (63) 919-329-2557 and (036) 288-5786.
