MANILA - Writer, columnist, and author Jessica Zafra has reportedly been confined in a hospital since Monday, according to a friend who is appealing for help for her medical expenses.
Fellow writer Joel Pablo Salud on Tuesday relayed a message from a friend of Zafra, Tina Cuyugan, explaining what happened and her current health.
Cuyugan said Zafra was found "conscious but disoriented" on the staircase of her apartment building after having fever for several days, The Philippine Star reported.
"Initial diagnosis indicated that she did not suffer a stroke, but was dehydrated, which resulted in an electrolyte imbalance," Cuyugan said. "CT and MRI scans show some inflammation of the brain, which may be due to an infection. She is now undergoing neurological observation."
According to Cuyugan, Zafra's only sister, Cheryl, is with her at the moment, "but this is a call to all her friends to pitch in and do what they can."
"As is the case with almost all artists who work freelance, Jessica does not have health insurance," she added.
Those who would like to donate can deposit to Cheryl's Security Bank account, under the name Cheryl Ann Grace Z. de Jesus, Cuyugan said.
