MANILA - "Miss Saigon" has released a promotional image of actress-singer Rachelle Ann Go in the role of Gigi Van Tranh, a hardened stripper in Vietnam originally portrayed by fellow Filipino Isay Alvarez.
Go, along with other Filipino cast members of "Miss Saigon," are currently doing previews of the play's 25th anniversary revival at the Prince Edward Theatre in London.
In the promotional photo taken by lensman Michael Le Poer Trench, Go is seen seated wearing only a two-piece costume and fishnet stockings.
Based on the on Giacomo Puccini's popular opera "Madame Butterfly," the musical centers on Kim, a 17-year-old Vietnamese bar girl who falls in love with an American solider during the fall of Saigon.
It premiered at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London in September 1989 with Tony award-winner Lea Salonga as Kim and 13 other Filipinos, including Alvarez.
Aside from Go, Filipinos in the updated "Miss Saigon" include Jonjon Briones as The Engingeer, and Julia Abueva and Tanya Manalang, who will reportedly be covering for half-Filipino Eva Noblezada in the role of Kim.
