MANILA, Philippines - The decades-old Ateneo-La Salle feud has reached theater with "Rivalry: The Musical," which is set to be staged in January next year.
The musical depicts how the famed competition has extended to different realms -- from business and professions to love and courtship.
Set in 1968, it revolves around 2 families -- the blue-blooded Valencias and the green-blooded Basilios. The sons in the families -- Paco and Tommy -- are in the Ateneo and De La Salle senior basketball teams, respectively, and are both hoping to win the heart of a girl from Maryknoll (now called Miriam College).
Ed Gatchalian, the Atenean behind "Rivalry: The Musical," said in a recent press conference that he has collaborated with La Sallian theater legend Jaime del Mundo for the project, which is still unfinished.
Through his piece, he hopes to "make theater-going a regular habit in the country."
The Ateneo-La Salle rivalry began as early as the 1930s, Gatchalian told The Philippine Star columnist Rosalinda Orosa in an interview. The cut-throat school-to-school basketball competition has evolved into a national phenomenon, followed even by those who do not belong to either schools. -- With a report from The Philippine Star
