MANILA – Ahead of the canonization of Pope John Paul II on Sunday, social media users recall how they encountered the well-loved church leader during his visits in the Philippines in 1981 and 1995.
On Saturday, ABS-CBN News posted on social networking site Twitter the question, “What's your fondest memory of Pope #JohnPaulII, who visited PH twice during his papacy? Share your photos, stories using #MgaBagongSanto.”
Netizens recalled how their lives were affected by the Pope, remembering where they were and what they felt during the visits.
Gellie Abogado remembered being with her mother during the visit and saw the Pope from afar.
Estelita Isabel, who was then a student, recalled not sleeping just to see the Pope.
Emerson Sarmiento said that they woke up early that day in 1995, and went to Quirino Grandstand to see the Pope.
Gem Cabreros said she felt goosebumps when the Pope finally appeared to the people.
Roxanne Regala, who attended World Youth Day, remembered Pope John Paul II speaking in Tagalog during the Mass.
The canonization of popes John Paul II and John XXIII is set on Sunday at the Vatican.
