MANILA, Philippines – “Happy but pressured.”
This is what Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2012 Janine Tugonon always says when asked about her victory in the country’s biggest beauty pageant.
Tugonon, a second-timer in the Bb. Pilipinas pageant, said she feels the pressure of making it to the Miss Universe top 5, following the runner-up finishes of her predecessors, Shamcey Supsup and Venus Raj.
“I feel happy but at the same time, I really feel pressured because people are telling me that Shamcey and Venus made it so the Philippines should have three consecutive years of making it to the Miss Universe,” she said in an interview on “[email protected]” on Tuesday.
Tugonon admitted that she also receives negative comments, but is still thankful for her supporters, which include Supsup.
“Shamcey texted me and I really, really appreciate it,” she said. “She said, ‘Don’t mind negative comments. Just focus on your goal, your mission. We’re here to help you.’”
Asked what made her stand out among the Bb. Pilipinas candidates, Tugonon said: “I think that night, I felt it, and that is very important. If you want to win, you should feel it, you should claim the crown. I think I showed it.”
Tugonon won first-runner up in last year’s Binibining Pilipinas pageant, losing to Supsup, who was then her roommate.
She gave up her runner-up placement to compete again this year, upon the request of her mother.
“My original plan was I’m going to study abroad this year, or work. And then one day, my mom told me to join again to win,” Tugonon shared.
“So I was like, ‘Of course you’d say that, you’re my mother,” she added. “We talked about it, we discussed, and here I am.”
Just like most beauty queens, Tugonon is open to the idea of joining show business after her reign as Bb. Pilipinas Universe.
She was quick to admit, however, that she is not a good actress. “I don’t know kasi acting is not… I’m not really good,” she said.
“Pero I think kung meron man mag-open na opportunity, I’ll grab it.”
The pharmacy cum laude graduate of the University of Santo Tomas also admitted that she is excited to see her longtime showbiz crush, Jericho Rosales.
“Ever since I was a kid, I really love Jericho Rosales. I really, really like him… Ang dami, ‘Forevermore,’ mga movies niya pinapanood ko talaga ‘yun lahat,” she said.
Tugonon, 22, said she is currently single. Unfortunately for the beauty queen, Rosales is already dating someone.
So she gave this message to the actor: “You’re a very, very great actor and I salute you. You’re so good.”
