MANILA, Philippines – After holding a global drink mixing campaign here last year, French cognac house Hennessy introduced its newest product in the country – a “limited edition” cognac.

Hennessy's Jean Michel Cochet unveils the limited edition Odyssey X.O. cognac

Called Odyssey X.O., the drink boasts of “complex” flavors unlike the company’s usual classic blend of eaux-de-vie.

It initially delivers a strong, peppery heat spiced with cloves and hints of old leather. This power eventually softens in the mouth, blurred by notes of vanilla, cinnamon and candied fruit.

A menu was specifically prepared at the Makati Shangri-La’s Shang Palace so Filipinos can better appreciate the cognac’s taste – from whole winter melon soup with seafood to steamed lapu-lapu in garlic sauce.

“Since 2007, Hennessy has been launching limited edition X.O. cognac, and this year it’s Odyssey X.O.,” the company said.

Cognac, named after a town in France, is a famous variety of brandy that is appreciated and collected by connoisseurs across the globe. Expensive and not instantly accessible, the product is considered by most people as a luxury item.

Hennessy earlier said that it hopes to get rid of the Filipinos’ notion that cognac is a “serious product.”

This, it said, can be done by mixing the cognac with more familiar flavors such as berry, citrus, ginger and apple, and holding several gigs.
