MANILA, Philippines – Did you know that some of the purses sold by the French luxury brands Chanel and Louis Vuitton are designed by a Filipino?

Ramir Bonghanoy, an engineer based in Cebu, has been tapped by Chanel and Louis Vuitton to come up with designs for some of its purses, which are worth over $3,000 when sold in their stores.

The Filipino designer, who specializes in furniture, recently flew in from Cebu for the Manila FAME trade show and home-fashion lifestyle event.

In an inter view on “Kris TV” aired on Thursday, Bonghanoy said Chanel ordered 2,000 pieces of his twisted stainless steel clutch, which has yet to be priced.

“It was sort of a frustration for manufacturers to come up with new shapes. Because for quite some time we’re making plain, rectangular shapes. So we twisted it (clutch),” he told “Kris TV” host Kris Aquino, who estimated that the purse may be priced at $3,500 to $4,000 when bought in a Chanel boutique.

Bonghanoy also showed a dark rose striped clutch he designed for Louis Vuitton, which sells for $3,200.

“[They ordered] 700 pieces,” he said, adding that Louis Vuitton recently ordered another 700 pieces of this design.
