MANILA, Philippines -- A new survey asked more than 5,000 respondents from different countries on who they think are the world's worst travelers.
And guess who topped the list -- the Americans.
The survey, conducted by Mandala Research for LivingSocial, covered 5,600 respondents from the United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
Of the number, 4,000 are Americans.
Twenty percent of respondents said the United States is the country with the "worst tourists." This is followed by China (15%), France (14%), Japan (12%), Russia (11%), Korea (9%), India (9%), Germany (8%), Spain (7%), Britain (5%), Canada (5%), Italy (4%), The Netherlands (3%), Ireland (2%), Switzerland (2%) and Australia (2%).
Other survey questions had American respondents confessing about having stolen something from hotels. The most common items that were pilfered include towels (28%), bath robes (8%), batteries (5%), pillows (4%), remote controls (3%), bibles (3%) and umbrellas (3%).
When it comes to travel mishaps, the most common include lost luggage (21%), bad weather (21%) and getting lost (19%).
The LivingSocial survey also showed that Americans travel abroad more than they get credit for.
"Our survey puts the old wives' tale to bed that only 15% of Americans own passports," Dave Madden, general manager of LivingSocial Escapes in North America, said in a statement. "Americans turn out to be pretty active globetrotters, with the average person having visited at least four countries."
"Unfortunately, Americans have pretty low opinions of themselves as travelers, so it's time to turn on that Yankee charm and improve our global image," Madden said about the "world's worst tourists" tag of the US.
Meanwhile, the new survey also listed the respondents' dream destinations. These are:
- Great Barrier Reef, Australia
- Eiffel Tower, France
- Pyramids of Giza, Egypt
- The Collosseum, Italy
- Disney World, Florida, US
- Las Vegas, Nevada, US
- Grand Canyon, Arizona, US
- Buckingham Palace, London, UK
- Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy
- Great Wall of China, China
Asked about who they would like to travel with, the respondents mentioned the following celebrities:
- Ellen DeGeneres
- Oprah Winfrey
- Taylor Swift
- Leonardo DiCaprio
- Katy Perry
