MANILA - Following Rose Fostanes' win and the historic achievement of Michael Martinez, another Filipino has proven his talent before the world, this time in comedy.

Nathaniel Cruz, a doctor by profession, won the "America Meet World" comedy video competition with his entry titled "Junjun: The Social Media Savvy Beggar (Episode 1 Hunger)."

"Congratulations to our first ever America Meet World Winner, Nathaniel Cruz! Nathaniel is a Doctor and comedian from the Philippines," the competition's website announced.

Cruz's video bested 137 other entries from over 20 countries. He had stiff competition with South African comedian Nik Rabinowitz, whose entry led Cruz's by 2,000 online votes at one point.

Rabinowitz finished runner-up to Cruz.

In his winning skit, Cruz plays a beggar who is more interested in Facebook likes than satisfying his hunger. The video boasts a 99% funny rating, with over 14,284 votes.

Cruz, for his prize, won a trip to New York City to meet the award-winning producers of the US comedy news program "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart."

"It's all about comedy pa rin," Cruz said in a previous guesting in "The Bottomline with Boy Abunda." "I believe na kahit hindi ganun ka-glamorous 'yung nire-represent ko -- 'cause we always excel in beauty pageants, in sports, in boxing -- it is high time we represent comedy."

"Why else would we be dubbed the happiest in the midst of all the tragedies that come our way?"
