MANILA, Philippines – Beauty pageant followers have high hopes for actress-model Isabelle Daza, the daughter of Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz, to follow in her mother's footsteps.
Even Diaz, in an interview following Janine Tugonon's runner-up finish at last year's Miss Universe pageant, joked that perhaps the beauty pageant was just waiting for her daughter to join.
That's why many were left wondering when Daza wasn't included in the list of candidates for this year's Binibining Pilipinas pageant.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News on Monday, Diaz explained that her daughter is “a little scared” to join the pageant, saying Daza is naturally shy.
But Diaz added that Daza has not really closed her doors on joining the renowned beauty competition.
“Hindi naman sa ayaw. You never know. The last minute, lalakas ang loob nun. She’s a little scared. She’s very fit now, so I don’t know,” she said.
Daza is currently 24 years old and the age requirement to qualify for Binibining Pilipinas is 25 at the time of the pageant, so Daza could still join next year.
Meanwhile, Diaz said she is proud of her daughter’s achievement in show business.
Diaz is set to appear in the the final installment of the upcoming romantic-comedy movie “It Takes A Man and A Woman” headlined by John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo.
Daza will portray the role of the woman whom Cruz’s character will be in a relationship with.
Asked if she is comfortable to see her daughter as a “kontrabida,” Diaz said: “She is bida-kontrabida. Belle doesn’t look like a kontrabida so she is a bida-kotrabida.”
School for beauty queens
Going back to the beauty pageant talk, Diaz said she has seen the daughter of actor Christopher de Leon, who is trying her luck in Binibinig Pilipinas.
“She’s beautiful, I saw her. She doesn’t look like any of them. I think she looks like the mother of Christopher (Lilia Dizon). She is gorgeous. She has the old movie star look – very nice kid. She’s also modeling,” she said.
Diaz said she is happy to see that a lot of beautiful Filipino women are stepping up to represent the country.
“Ang daming Pilipina ngayon magaganda talaga at talagang palaban. They will push their way in, which is good,” she said.
Having said this, Diaz has agreed to share her knowledge in a beauty school that modeling agency Mercator plans to put up.
“I think that’s good. We have a lot of beautiful women, they just need a little polishing. It’s getting scarier and scarier because the women are very, very aggressive. Sure [I’ll share my knowledge]. But I’m not gonna teach everything. I don’t want everyone to be a winner. Just a few,” she said.
After a rigorous screening process, the Binibining Pilipinas organization has narrowed down the list of hopefuls to 50 candidates who will vie for the title in the 50th edition of the national pageant in April. - from a report by Mario Dumaual, ABS-CBN News
