MANILA – Alumni members and students of the University of the Philippines took to the social networking site Facebook to stop the impending closure of one of the popular eating places in the Diliman campus: the Beach House Canteen.

The Facebook page “HUWAG ISARA ang BEACH HOUSE naming MAHAL” was set up just this month and now has over 2,000 “likes.”

It is solely dedicated to the campaign against the reported closure of the canteen.

One of its posts said: “According to the owners of Beach House, UP admin says that there is a drainage system in the area and it's [unsanitary] for students to eat near it. This they realized after 26 years...”

In addition to the Facebook page, there is also a petition against its closure addressed to UP Vice Chancellor Melanie Flores. A copy of the petition has been posted in

Located beside the UP Main Library and the Sunken Garden, the Beach House Canteen is popular for its pork barbecue, which costs P25 per stick, and other grilled food.

A huge tarpaulin with the words “Huwag isara ang Beach House naming mahal” now hangs in front of the canteen.
