MANILA -- Miss International 2013 Bea Rose Santiago and fellow beauty queens Ariella Arida and Mutya Datul were recognized Wednesday by Congress for bringing pride to the country with their respective pageant performances.
The three beauty queens, who are all from the same Binibining Pilipinas batch, personally received the commendations at Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City.
Santiago won Miss International, the fifth Filipino to do so, in December in Tokyo, Japan, a month after Arida finished 3rd runner-up in Miss Universe in Moscow, Russia. Datul, meanwhile, was crowned Miss Supranational last September in Minsk, Belarus.
On Wednesday, the Senate also adopted a resolution commending Santiago for her Miss International win. Sen. Lito Lapid, who authored the resolution, said Santiago "gave Filipinos unparalleled pride and showed the world the grace and excellence of Filipino beauty."
Santiago, Datul, and Arida are only a few of the several Filipinos who won or nearly won international pageants in 2013. Actress Megan Young, who was crowned Miss World 2013, was earlier recognized by the Philippine government for the achievement.
