MANILA, Philippines – The impeachment trial of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona claimed the top spot among local Twitter trending topics afternoon of Tuesday, the second day of proceedings at the Senate.
The #CJonTrial hashtag being used by ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs programs, ANC and DZMM Teleradyo began to trend around 3:50 p.m. This was shortly after the Senate court went on a supposed minute-long break for a huddle on Senator-Judge Alan Peter Cayetano’s motion to divide the house.
Cayetano was challenging the ruling of Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, court presiding officer, to disallow the appearance in the court of Corona and his family over their questioned real properties.
The minute-long break dragged on, and by around 4:15 p.m. the ABS-CBN hashtag #CJonTrial was second among Twitter trending topics. By 4:30 p.m., this hashtag was the foremost local Twitter topic, followed by the #SadMomentWhen and #WhenImAlone.
The terms ‘Prosecution’ and ‘JPE’ (Enrile’s initials) also trended briefly, along with #CoronaTrial, the hashtag being used by several media organizations.
A trending topic generally indicates the number of people with Twitter accounts talking about a common topic, as indicated by the usage of the # sign, followed by the topic.
On Monday, first day of Corona’s trial, #CJonTrial, placed second on Twitter's trending topics for several hours.
The Philippines was cited by a report in 2010 as the sixth top user of Twitter in the world.
