Beauty queen asked: What if your boyfriend is gay?
MANILA, Philippines -- Miss Universe 2012 first runner-up Janine Tugonon sees virginity as "the greatest gift you can give to your partner."
"Pero hindi naman ibig sabihin when you lose it, parang kulang narin 'yung kaya mong ibigay sa partner mo, 'di ba," the 23-year-old Filipina beauty said on Wednesday during an interview on late-night newscast "Bandila."
Tugonon, who placed second to Miss USA Olivia Culpo in the Miss Universe pageant last month, is in a nine-month relationship with 29-year-old Jaypee Santos.
In interviews following her runner-up finish in Las Vegas, Tugonon also had to address negative reactions to her relationship. Only moments after the pageant coronation, Santos was interviewed on live television for his reaction on Tugonon's performance.
Filipino netizens immediately took to various social networking sites to air their opinions on Santos. For her part, Tugonon has come to the defense of her boyfriend.
"Pinag-pe-pray ko na lang, patience and strength," Tugonon said on Wednesday, when asked on how she reacts to "bashers."
'Gay boyfriend better than a womanizer'
The University of Sto. Tomas pharmacy graduate also answered a hypothetical question asked by "Bandila" anchor Boy Abunda in relation to Santos -- "What if you found out your boyfriend is gay?"
"My boyfriend, syempre sa una medyo mahu-hurt ako, 'Oh my gosh,'" Tugonon answered. "Pero sa 'kin kasi, pag mahal ko ang isang tao, natatanggap ko eh. As long as kaya niyang makipag-relationship sa 'kin, OK lang sa 'kin."
"Ang sa akin talaga, sabi ko, mas matatanggap ko 'yung gay kaysa babaero. That's my stand," she said.
Now currently fulfilling her duties as Binibining Pilipinas-Universe, the Bataan beauty said she and Santos have nonetheless found time to discuss plans of getting married.
"We're planning, nag-iisip narin kami. Pero sabi namin, uunanhin muna namin 'yung family, 'yung needs ng family namin pareho, and after noon, doon nalang 'yung kaming dalawa nalang," she said.
