MANILA -- Considered as one of the biggest news centers in the Philippines, the ABS-CBN newsroom is always packed with busy journalists chasing stories and filing news reports.
But on Thursday night, the usual mood of the newsroom changed as Pinoy comedian Alex Calleja paid a visit to crack his jokes, with ABS-CBN journalists as his audience.
Calleja, who is also a scriptwriter for some of the network's comedy shows, is currently vying for the title "Funniest Person in the World" on Laugh Factory, one of the most popular comedy clubs in the United States.
He is competing against 19 comedians from different countries, such as India, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Greece, Uganda, Pakistan, Brazil, Singapore, Jamaica, Indonesia, Finland, Croatia, Macedonia, Norway, Germany, Czech Republic, and Slovenia.
With his wit and creativity, Calleja successfully took the lead in the competition's semifinals as his video garnered over 2,855,000 views as of this writing.
Calleja's jokes are primarily based on his personal anecdotes-- from childhood to fatherhood. He also pokes fun at brands' taglines and marketing strategies.
Despite his lead, Calleja said he is not overconfident. Thus, he is asking help from Pinoy netizens to watch his video and click the "heart" button, as the number of views will play a huge part on the final round.
Voting will end on December 5, and the semi-finalists are set to perform in front a panel of experts and celebrities in Helsinki, Finland.
The final five finalists will be announced on December 6, with the winners to be chosen based on votes by online users and celebrity judges.
