MOUNTAIN PROVINCE - Luisa Balangyao, the oldest woman in Besao, Mountain Province, can still walk long distances despite her age.
Balangyao, who is 106 years old, lives in Sitio Panabungen in Barangay Laylaya in the town of Besao. She had twelve children, eight of whom have already passed away. Her husband, on the other hand, died of stroke in 1991.
At her age, Balangyao can still cook, do the laundry, and take care of her children and grandchildren. She also walks towards mountainous areas to visit her relatives and children.
"Noong bata pa kami talagang inaalagaan niya kami kung wala y'ung mga magulang namin. (When we were younger, she used to take care of us whenever our parents were away.)," her nephew, Mario, said.
Balangyao's pastime includes weeding and gardening. She also attends mass every Sunday.
According to Balangyao, the secret to her health is her diet of vegetables, her obedience to elders and her strong faith.
She has been recognized by the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office as one of its centenarians.
MSWD Officer Nilda Docallas said that out of 748 senior citizens in their municipality, Balangyao is the oldest.
