The so-called "It Girls" drew flak from social media users after they posted photos of themselves wearing souvenir communist hats at China's Tiananmen Square.
In the now deleted Instagram photos, Georgina Wilson, her sister Jess, and their cousin Martine Cajucom were seen sporting the caps in the area where student protesters died back in 1989. Estimates of the death toll range from several hundred to thousands.
Some netizens called out the three, saying they were being inappropriate and insensitive.
Others tried to defend the ladies, pointing out that the hats were being sold by Chinese locals themselves.
In another post, Wilson and Cajucom were seen wearing cheongsams as they tried to make light of the issue.
Cajucom even wrote: "We are the worst tourists."
But one Instagram user commented: "Cultural appropriation is not cool." -- ANC
