ZAMBOANGA CITY - Disability failed to dampen the spirit of Abdulaziz Dapilin, a 20-year-old student who will soon be graduating with honors from Western Mindano State University.
Dapilin a native of Lamitan City, Basilan, was born with Marfan Syndrome, a disorder in the body's connective tissue which caused blindness on his right eye, and semi-blindness on the left. Only 1 in 5,000 people have Marfan syndrome.
Despite his health woes, Dapilin pursued his dreams, and will graduate cum laude.
"Bachelor of Elementary Education major in Special Education SY 2016-2017, I praise Allah upon all conditions, for blessing me with a kind of disability that have caused encouragement and success rather than discouragement and failure," Dapilin said in his Facebook account.
Dapilin wanders the campus just like any student but he depends on his laptop which has a special app that serves as his notebook.
Dapilin said he would like to teach students with special needs after taking the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) in September.
