MANILA -- Orman Bag-ao of the Long Bar at Raffles Makati will represent the Philippines at this year’s Bacardi Legacy Global Cocktail competition happening on May 18-24 in Berlin, Germany.

During the finals night of the competition last Friday at the 12 Monkeys Music Hall & Pub in Makati, Bag-ao wowed the judges with his Rain or Shine cocktail, while regaling the crowd with stories about his bartending journey which took him from Davao to Manila.

Rain or Shine, his winning cocktail, used Bacardi Superior with guava juice, lime juice, carrot juice, and sugar syrup, shaken then strained.

Bag-ao bested the four other finalists at this year’s competition -- Larry Guevara of Alley, Kenneth Bandivas of Prisma, Aliuss Abrazado of Buddha Bar, and Ralph Allen Santos of Bitters.

Each of the competitors performed for a total of seven minutes with two minutes of preparation time. While creating their drinks, they also had to narrate how their cocktail came to be, and historical tidbits about their chosen Bacardi rum.

Contestants were judged not only by their drink (taste, replicability around the world), but also by their overall performance during the seven minutes.

Esteemed judges made up of both local and international experts in mixology, including Bacardi brand ambassadors Dickie Cullimore and Richard Irwin, who were on hand to pick the best among the Philippines’ finest.

Happening every year, the Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition challenges bartenders worldwide to create a classic legacy cocktail like Bacardi’s own creations, the Mojito or the Daquiri.
