MANILA -- There's very little doubt that the country's own Maxine Medina did her best to prepare for the upcoming 65th Miss Universe pageant, but, as the saying goes, a little luck never hurts.
Marites Allen, a feng shui expert, gave her prediction for Medina's chances for the competition and the forecast didn't feel all too optimistic. Allen explained that while Medina may look confident on the outside, by the end of it all, the pressure that comes with trying to win the country's first back-to-back titles may just overwhelm the Filipina.
"The issue with the Horse [referring to Medina's animal sign], during the Chinese New Year, the conflicts will begin. The issue with her is while the strength could be very strong, the perception is just going to be too much. ...Internally she will be feeling so much pressure," Allen said.
She did note that the pageant will be held before the shift to the Year of the Rooster, so her predictions may not hold much water. Citing her almanac for this year, she added that the January 30 date for the pageant shouldn't also pose any problems for Medina as it is the "Day of the Snake," which she said has not been a traditional enemy of the Horse.
Allen did advise Medina to wear outfits with lots of white, silver, or gold for luck.
Medina is the Philippines' bet for an unprecedented back-to-back wins in the competition. She will look to succeed Pia Wurtzbach, Miss Universe 2015.
In a guest appearance on late night talk show "Tonight with Boy Abunda," Medina boldly declared that she will take home the crown when asked to describe herself. She also looked more confident in her interview than in the past, where she has been criticized for appearing shaky when answering questions.
The 65th Miss Universe pageant will be held in Manila for the third time.
