MANILA -- With just three weeks to go before the 65th Miss Universe coronation night, two candidates are seeking financial support to get to the Philippines.
Miss Dominican Republic Sal Garcia and Miss Haiti Raquel Pelissier
took to websites giveforward.com and gofundme.com to raise funds so they can join the prestigious beauty contest.
The 24-year-old Garcia needs US$10,000 for her travel expenses.
Because of the recent disasters in her country, she said the government is unable to support her.
"We are resourceful people and if every Dominican helps with just one dollar, or more, I am certain that united we can garner the resources needed to successfully integrate the participation of our country into the pageant and know... We might just bring home the crown. A united nation can achieve anything," she wrote.
Thankfully, she was able to raise $11,104 in just seven days.
Pelissier, on the other hand, is still quite far from her target of US$6,000. As of writing, she has only raised $455.
Just like Miss Dominican Republic, the beauty queen also failed to receive government support because of recent disasters, like Hurricane Matthew, which killed nearly 900 people and left 175,000 homeless.
