MANILA - The camp of losing Talisay, Negros Occidental mayoral candidate Shiela Saratan is set to file an appeal with the Commission on Elections (Comelec), amid claims of irregularities during the May 9 local elections.

Her husband, outgoing Mayor Eric Saratan, questioned the reliability of vote counting machines, saying it printed ballot receipts that were not clear.

Saratan's camp will ask the Comelec for a recount of votes.

Her supporters also gathered in the town on Saturday evening to protest the election results.

Saratan lost to former Vice Mayor Neil Lizares, who was declared as mayor-elect last Tuesday.

She received 21,119 votes while Lizares tallied 28,440 votes, according to the Comelec transparency server at the Parish Pastoral Council for Reponsible Voting (PPCRV).
