ILOILO - Members of prominent political families emerged as winners in the local elections in the province of Iloilo.

The 1st District of Iloilo is once again dominated by the Garins. This, after incumbent Rep. Richard Garin was re-elected while his father, Oscar, was elected mayor of Guimmal town and mother, Ninfa, mayor of San Joaquin town.

Richard's sister, Christine, was elected as the first lady vice governor of Iloilo while his other sister, Sharon, is the representative of the Aambis-owa Party-list.

In the province's 2nd District, the Gorricetas won. Incumbent Rep. Arcadio Gorriceta and his son, incumbent Pavia town mayor Mike, were both re-elected. Arcadio's nephew, Luigi, also won as Sangguniang Bayan member.

The mayor-elect admitted that his brother Noy Noy is an outgoing councilor while his other brother, Edgar, is an incumbent barangay captain whose term is ending in October.

But Sorongon, who became a councilor at the age of 19, decided to step up and challenge the ruling family.

The 3rd District remains to be the bailiwick of the Defensors. Both Rep. Arthur "Toto" Defensor Jr. and his father, Governor Arthur Sr., were re-elected. The eldest sibling, Lorenz, also won as Sangguniang Panlalawigan member.

The 4th District is dominated by the Birons. Former Rep. Ferj Biron won in the same position while his two sons, Braeden John and Bryant Paul, were elected as mayor and Sangguniang Panlalawigan member, respectively.

Iloilo's 5th District, meanwhile, remains a Tupas country. Although incumbent Rep. Niel "Jun-jun" Tupas Jr. and his wife, Gel, lost in the race for the vice gubernatorial and 5th District representative positions, respectively, Niel's brother, Raul, was elected in favor of Gel. His brother, Nielo, also won as Sangguniang Panlalawigan member while Beng was re-elected as mayor of Barotac Viejo.

Their brother-in-law, Parley Balleza, the husband of the youngest Tupas, was also elected as vice mayor of Barotac Viejo. Their sister-in-law who is the wife of Lex Tupas was also elected as councilor in Iloilo City.
