All 6 VP bets to square off at debate

ABS-CBN News

MANILA -- All six vice presidential candidates are expected to go head-to-head at the PiliPinas Debate 2016 at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Sunday.

Senators Francis Escudero, Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., Alan Peter Cayetano, Gringo Honasan and Antonio Trillanes IV, and Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo have all confirmed their attendance.

The debate was organized by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) with the cooperation of CNN Philippines, BusinessMirror, the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas, and the UST.

The face-off will have eight segments with two moderators, a 3-person panel, and pre-selected audience members throwing queries at the candidates.

Candidates will also be given a minute to rebut a rival's answer if it involves him or her.

Among the topics which are expected to be tackled in the debate are: corruption, poverty, political dynasties, human rights, peace and order, traffic and other urban problems, internet connectivity, foreign policy, and the issue of the vice president's role as a "spare tire".

The event will run from 5 to 7 p.m. at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

Despite the sweltering heat, supporters of the candidates converged outside the UST campus even before noon.

At least 296 security personnel from the national police, Bureau of Fire Protection, UST and CNN Philippines were deployed at the campus.

A total of 4,100 people will be allowed inside the debate hall.

Each candidate has been allotted 165 seats for 15 members of their campaign teams and 150 supporters.

Some 2,500 seats, meanwhile, were opened for the public on a first come, first served basis.

ABS-CBN will host another vice presidential debate on April 17, and the third presidential debate on April 24. -- With reports from Ker Metanoia Oliva and Katrina Domingo, ABS-CBN News
