Former director-general of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and son of Jesus Is Lord Church founder Bro. Eddie Villanueva, Joel Villanueva has claimed he recognizes the legal rights of homosexual partners.

Asked to comment on Manny Pacquiao’s statement on homosexuals, Villanueva said it was “very hard to comment on anyone’s faith,” but believes there should be utmost respect for all the parties—both for the homosexuals and for the Church, which holds the sacrament of marriage sacred.

"The Church matter remains with the Church," he said on ANC's Headstart on Monday.

He however maintained that the term "marriage" has to remain sacred as it is an institution of the Church.

He, however, believes that long-term homosexual partners deserve legal recognition of their conjugal properties, saying it is their “human right.”

Additionally, he is against divorce, but wants annulment to be made affordable.

Meanwhile, he believes that Philippines is not yet ready for death penalty, noting of a much-needed improvement in the justice system, even citing himself as an example of being wrongly accused.

“Wag natin ipilit kaagad, there’s so many things we have to do in our justice system. Pag nangyari ho ‘yan, ma’am, puro mahihirap lang yung isasakdal natin at dadalhin natin, tapos lahat ng mayayaman, because they can afford good lawyers, brilliant lawyers makakalaya ho sila,” he said.

Villanueva is running under the Liberal Party.
