GENERAL SANTOS CITY - Vice-presidential candidate Senator Antonio Trillanes IV on Wednesday kicked off his campaign for the May 9, 2016 elections in General Santos City.

More than a thousand leaders of the Samahang Magdalo gathered to show their support for Trillanes, chanting his name and waving white flags as he entered the gymnasium.

According to Trillanes, he started his campaign in General Santos City for three reasons.

First, it is the hometown of his wife and he considers the city as his second home.

Second, he got a huge number of votes here in the 2007 and 2013 elections.

Third, General Santos has the most number of Samahang Magdalo members, estimated to be around 10,000.

"Ang aking asawa na si Arlene ay taga-GenSan. Dito rin ako nakakuha ng pinakamaraming boto sa huling dalawang eleksyon. Dito rin pinakamaraming Magdalo members," he said.

In his speech, Trillanes admitted that he has nothing compared to the other vice presidential candidates in terms of campaign funds.

Trillanes is a member of the Nacionalista Party but is running as an independent candidate and has no running mate.

But the senator has expressed support for the presidential candidacy of Senator Grace Poe, who is running alongside Senator Francis Escudero.

He said he will announce in April the senatorial candidates he and his group will support, including Rep. Samuel Pagdilao, who will accompany him for the rest of the campaign period.

In an earlier interview on radio dzMM, Trillanes said he will not back down from the race despite his low ratings in pre-election surveys.

"Hindi po mangyayari yan. Desidido po ang aming grupo, desididong-desidido ako na tapusin po ito. Iaalok ko po ang aking sarili sa ating mga kababayan and it's up to them," he said.

"Hindi ko pwedeng sabihin kung anong lamang ko sa kanila," he said, pertaining to the other vice presidential candidates, namely Escudero, Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo, Senator Gregorio Honasan II, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, and Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

"But I would like to say tayo naman nung nanilbihan, nanilbihan naman tayo ng maayos. Hindi tayo nangurakot at nung mga panahon na kailangan tumindig, tumindig tayo, lumaban po tayo sa mga tiwali sa ating lipunan... Kung naghahanap sila ng kayang tumindig at lumaban para sa kanila, tayo po yun." -- Report from Francis Canlas, ABS-CBN News SOCCSKSARGEN
