SEOUL – Ten elderly people died and 17 were injured Friday when a blaze swept through a nursing home in South Korea, firefighters said.
The fire took hold of the two-storey building before dawn in the southeastern city of Pohang. Those who died were aged in their 80s.
The victims suffocated from smoke because they were unable to move quickly due to their age, a spokeswoman at the fire station in the city's Nambu district told AFP.
She said about 20 trucks and 200 firefighters were sent to the blaze, which was brought under control after about 30 minutes. An investigation into the cause was under way.
