TOKYO -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 hit the central Japan prefectures of Shizuoka and Aichi on Saturday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

No tsunami warning was issued following the 9:56 quake, which registered 4 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 in the cities of Hamamatsu, Kosei in western Shizuoka, as well as in the cities of Toyohashi and Shinshiro in eastern Aichi.

No abnormalities have been observed at nuclear facilities at the Hamaoka nuclear power plant in Shizuoka Prefecture, according to its operator Chubu Electric Power Co.

The plant is one of several that have been shut down across the country at the request of the government over safety concerns following the Fukushima catastrophe.

The focus of the quake was in waters off the coast of Hamamatsu at a depth of 40 kilometers.
