WASHINGTON - The US congressman whose Colorado district suffered a deadly shooting at the showing of a Batman movie lashed out with palpable rage Friday, calling the suspect a "psychotic son of a bitch."
Democrat Ed Perlmutter, who represents the Denver suburb of Aurora, said the White House alerted him of the tragedy, in which an alleged lone gunman killed 12 people and wounded 59 others at a showing of "The Dark Knight Rises."
"I mean, we finished voting late last night, and then to have a psychotic son of a bitch like this do something," a stunned Perlmutter told 850 KOA News Radio in Denver.
"And I'm sorry for the cussing. You know, it just is boggling to my mind."
Perlmutter's rage is doubly acute given that Aurora is just 15 miles (32 kilometers) from Columbine High School, where two students went on a 1999 shooting spree that left 13 people dead before they killed themselves.
Perlmutter also released a statement through his congressional office, saying he was "stunned and furious" over the shooting at the cinema.
"Colorado is not a violent place, but we have some violent people," he said. "We are a strong and resilient community, and we will lean on each other in the days, weeks and months to come."
Police said they apprehended suspect James Holmes, 24, when he surrendered without incident after the massacre, during which he was dressed in full black body armor.
