LOS ANGELES – The Social Security System (SSS) is setting up shop in the US.

The SSS has been an institution for retirement benefits, pensions, and insurance. It is now looking to have a more hands-on approach when it comes to servicing Filipinos in the US.

"Bubuksan namin yun opisina namin doon pero hindi namin ititigil doon, dahan-dahan, kapag kailangan magbubukas kami ng additional offices," said SSS Chairman, Emilio de Quiros.

SSS held a one day outreach in Los Angeles that drew nearly a hundred pensioners. But it will soon have a permanent office at the Consulate in San Francisco.

"It's hard to go back to the Philippines to have your pension processed. This is very convenient," said Maria Ituralde.

Despite having online services, members like Ituralde sometimes prefer to do business in person.

The SSS office in San Francisco will start operating next month, as well as in Toronto.

"We offer verification for those who want to activate their SSS membership, for those who want to file their pension right after retirement pension, benefit claims and also for those who are pensioners of SSS who are required to come to us for annual confirmation of the pensioner. So we are here to give them the resources," said Maritess Marin of SSS.

Aside from a permanent spot in the San Francisco and Toronto consulate, SSS will try to reach out to as many Filipinos as possible, taking the services on the road and visiting other consulates.
