MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Thursday handed out awards to 34 outstanding families of overseas Filipino workers (OFW), as part of the 8th Model OFW Family of the Year Awards (MOFYA).
"Now on its 8th year, the MOFYA has become a symbol of the unity and solidarity of the Filipino family, notwithstanding the challenges that OFW families face in modern times. The MOFYA recognizes the determination of OFW families to balance the necessity for financial needs and for family unity," Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said.
The two awardees for the 2012 MOFYA national level, namely, Engr. Carlos R. Asuncion and Family for the land-based category and Capt. Manuel D. Gabornes and family for the sea-based category. Engr. Asuncion and his family are from Region I, while Capt. Gabornes and his family are from Region 8.
Two families also received special awards: Dr.Orlando P. Paber and family, and Yco M. Tan and family got the Outstanding Achievement in Community Projects and the Outstanding Achievement in Entrepreneurship Awards respectively.
For the first time, the Best OFW Family Circle of the Year award was handed out, recognizing the efforts of more than 1,649 active OFW Family Circles established by the OWWA. Thanksgiving Multi-Purpose Cooperative (TMPC) based in Tuba, Benguet in the Cordillera Administrative Region received the award.
This year, 109 OFW families were nominated from across the OWWA's 17 Regional Welfare Offices.
The winning families were selected based on the following criteria: (1) wholesomeness of the family; (2) success in chosen profession or any field of education; (3) success in financial management; (4) and civic or community involvement and leadership.
The 2012 MOFYA regional winners for the land-based sector are as follows: Saluquen Family-CAR; Marquez Family-NCR; Asuncion Family-Region 1; Alonzo Family-Region ll; David Family-Region lll; Martirez Family-Region lV-A; Brillantes Family-Region lV-B; Tan Family-Region V; Fajardo Family-Region Vl; Omambac Family-Region Vll; Custodio, Jr. Family-Region Vlll; Paber Family-Region lX; Supangan Jr. Family-Region X; Silvosa Family-Region Xl; Delos Reyes Family-Region Xll; Arangali Family-CARAGA; Nul Family-ARMM.
For the sea-based category, they are: Antonio Family-CAR, Dasas Family-NCR; Fontanilla Family-Region 1; Pagaddu Family-Region II; Ignacio Family-Region III; Altura Family-Region lV-A; Acosta Family-Region lV-B; Florez Family-Region V; Decolongon Family-Region Vl; Tabigue Family-Region Vll; Gabornes Family-Region Vlll; Lubaton Family-Region IX; Preciado Family-Region X; Alfaras Family-Region Xl; Frisco Family-Region XII; Nicolas Sonsona Family-CARAGA; and Mabiliran Family-ARMM.
