MANILA, Philippines - A mosaic of St. Pedro Calungsod's image is set to be installed at the crypt of the St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican on Thursday.

Philippine Ambassador to the Holy See Mercedes A. Tuason said Calungsod's image will be installed next to the tomb of Pope Paul VI.

Tuason said it is "a singular honor and privilege for the Filipino people to have the image installed at the Vatican grotto at this time."

The image was crafted by Studio del Mosaico, Fabrica di San Pietro. Some 600 different tones, shades and tints were used to complete the work, which depicts San Pedro as a young man wearing camisa de chino, with a martyr’s palm pressed to his chest and carrying the Doctrina Christiana.

Pope Francis is scheduled to bless Calungsod's mosaic at 3:30 p.m., Thursday (Italy time).

A mass presided by Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle will follow. Some 120 priests from different parts of Italy will concelebrate in solidarity with the Filipino people.

The mass will be dedicated to all the victims who perished during the recent disasters that hit the Philippines, as well as the survivors and those who are helping in relief efforts.

Pope Benedict XVI canonized Calungsod, a 17th century teen martyr, last October 21, 2012.
