MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has identified the 3 Filipino crew members who drowned in a failed sea rescue in South Korea.

DFA assistant secretary Raul Hernandez identified the victims as Henry Morada, Bert Jautea and Jason Sason.

The 3 were onboard the Malaysia-registered cargo vessel Shinline when it capsized due to strong waves near the island of Jeju Thursday.

The coast guard of South Korea was able to respond immediately to rescue the 15 crew members of the cargo ship, but one of the rescue vessels also sank, leading to the deaths of the 3 Filipinos and 2 Chinese seafarers.

Three other Filipino crew members were rescued and were identified as Christopher Malpaya, Christopher Lapitan and Gerald Espina.

The DFA has yet to determine when the remains of the victims will be repatriated to the Philippines. -- Report from Arnell Ozaeta, dzMM
