MANILA, Philippines – The alleged suspect in the brutal killing of a Dubai-based businesswoman is now under the custody of the Sharjah police.

Roberto Bayacap of the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai told dzMM that suspect Erick de Chavez was transferred from Dubai to Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.

De Chavez is also an undocumented worker, Bayacap said.

Varona was found days after she was reported missing. Her body was discovered inside the trunk of her car parked somewhere in Sharjah.

Varona’s family said the suspect is a family friend who owed Varona more than P3.5 million.

Bayacap added that Varona’s body will be released to her family once the police investigation is over.

Varona worked and lived in Dubai for 30 years. She first worked as a receptionist of a hotel until finally putting up the very first Pinoy bakery. Since then, Varona managed to establish three other successful businesses in Dubai.
