OMAN – The Filipino Catholic community in Muscat was able to celebrate, for the first time, a much anticipated tradition in the Philippines—the Santacruzan.
“Ten years na po kami dito ay wala po kaming nakikita, kaya medyo nag-isip tayo na gawin ang ganitong bagay,” said organizer Russel Sebolino.
With the help of the Families in Jesus, El Shaddai, Filipino Friends of Jesus in Oman and the Couple’s For Christ, the first-ever Santacruzan became a success.
“In order also to promote the devotion to our Blessed Mother. There are many good things happening in the Middle East at ang kasama po dito ay ang pagkakaisa ng mga Pilipino sapagkat sila ay may isang pananampalataya,” said Sebolino.
Marilou Marcelo, who acted as the procession’s Queen of Flowers, said the event was a way to give praise and thanks to “Mama Mary”.
Those in the procession looked like contestants in a beauty pageant because of their beautiful gowns.
The Pinoys also aim to impart among the youth the traditions and culture practiced in the Philippines.
“Sa ganitong selebrasyon ay naipamalas namin ang tradisyon ng Pilipino,” said Hermana Mayor Edna Cadampog.
The organizers plan to make the Santacruzan a yearly event in Muscat. Report from Rowen Soldevilla, ABS-CBN Middle East News Bureau
