BERKELEY, California – To say that 17-year old Jalen Rosales is an achiever — is an understatement.

This 6′3, 235 lbs.Filipino-American linebacker started playing football at age 6.

Since then, Jalen said he’s been passionate about this team sport. “I like working with guys. I don’t like being by myself. It makes everything more fun.”

Jalen has been awarded Most Valuable Player in every level at Berkeley High School. He was also captain of the football team all the years he played.

Fred Sims, coach of the Berkeley High football team said, “He’s just an inspiration to the guys. Once you lead by example, others can really follow. He’s one of those guys who lead by example.”

With his 3.65 grade point average and his dominance in the field, Jalen was recruited by over 20 different colleges all over the country.

He said, “My dad, he would talk to me and say — this is the result of your hard work, you worked hard for this. When it comes down to it, you know it’s the right decision.”

And it was.

Out of all the colleges that fought over him, Jalen chose to go to the world’s most prestigious military academy — West Point.

Jalen is the first Fil-Am to ever receive a football scholarship from this revered institution.

He said, “West Point is true to who I am. I want to have a different experience in college.”

Jalen compared football to a warzone. If he goes into combat as America’s soldier one day — he said he will be ready.

He said, “If I go through the training and work as hard as I can, I’ll be prepared for whatever I come across.”

Jalen said he’s bound for the New York-based West Point on July 18.

His younger brother, Jerek, who’s Berkeley High’s running back, said Jalen leaves behind a challenge for the other players.

Jerek said, “He inspires me to do better than him.”

The West Point may be his next stop — but for Jalen, his ultimate goal is become the best linebacker in the National Football League.

“Someday, that will come,” said Jalen, who knows he has what it takes to be winner in every way.
