MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino has ordered the Department of Foreign Affairs to ensure the safety of Filipinos in Thailand following the declaration of martial law in the country.
"President Aquino has directed Secretary Albert del Rosario to ensure the safety of Filipinos in Thailand following the declaration of Martial Law by the Thai Army. We note the DFA statement that the Philippines is closely monitoring the political developments in Thailand," Communication Secretary Sonny Coloma said.
Coloma pointed out that the DFA has already raised the Alert Level in Thailand from 1 to 2.
“Under Alert Level 2, Filipinos in Bangkok and the surrounding areas are instructed to restrict non-essential movements, avoid public places, and prepare for possible evacuation when necessary.”
Coloma reiterated the joint statement of the foreign ministers of the ASEAN regarding the political situation in Thailand.
"The Philippines supported the joint statement of the Foreign Ministers calling for a peaceful resolution to the on-going challenge in Thailand through dialogue and observance of democratic principles and the rule of law," he said.
On Tuesday, the Thai military declared martial law. Thailand has been locked in a political stalemate since last year following allegations of corruption and mismanagement against ousted Prime Minister yingluck Shinawatra.
