Fil-Canadian boxer wins fight, remains undefeated
ONTARIO – The boxing pride of the Filipino-Canadian community took to the ring again for his eighth professional fight and did not disappoint his fans.
Marc "Gwapo" Pagcaliwangan faced his opponent, Georgian fighter George Gachechiladze for their Super Bantamweight Division fight at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. Their match was the second main event of the night.
The six-round match was intense with both fighters determined to be the victor.
The Fil-Canadian started strong and gained the advantage with more efficient punches to seize the first few rounds.
The Eastern European began to respond in the third round and got the upperhand in the fifth with vicious hooks.
The sixth and final round stirred the audience as stronger blows were exchanged without a knockout.
Pagcaliwangan emerged victorious in a majority decision by the judges.
Balitang Canada was able to catch Pagcaliwangan and his team after the fight.
"I feel good. You know though I wasn't really impressed with my fight. I wanted a knockout but you know a win is a win. I worked hard for it and I got the win. I deserved it and I won like in front of my home, my friends, my family, and all my supporters and I'm happy about it," he said.
The Filipino-Canadian community, together with his relatives and friends, came in full force.
"I'm very happy for him right now. I'm just glad he's healthy. He's happy he won. I'm glad he's not injured," said his girlfriend, Hannah Guerrero.
Pagcaliwangan will rest for a few days then it's back to training in the ring. Plans are already underway for his next fight in June.
