VIENNA, Austria - Concerned Filipinos in Austria on Friday (May 11) will stage a rally in front of Chinese embassy in Vienna to protest its recent aggressive encroachments on the Philippines’ Scarborough Shoal.
Volet SB Gerstl, a Filipina community leader in Austria called on Pinoys to support the Philippines’ sovereign claim to the Scarborough Shoal which has been in Philippine maps since 1743.
“Filipinos in Austria show strong support and solidarity for our cause. In behalf of my group, I am calling on all Filipinos and all those others who believe in freedom and the right of every country to control its own destiny to join us in our protest rally infront of the Chinese embassy in Vienna at 1500 on Friday, May 11," Gerstl said.
Austrians and a group of Tibetians are also expected to join the protest rally.
Filipinos around the world are set to hold protests in front of Chinese embassies and consulates on Friday (May 11).
China considers the Scarborough Shoal, located 124 nautical miles from the Philippines’ Zambales province, to be its “inherent territory” even though it lies more than 500 nautical miles from the nearest China port of Hainan.
Manila stepped up its calls to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to back up its moves to prevent Beijing’s bullying, noting that China repeatedly violated UN and regional protocols.
China had said it does not recognize Manila’s assertion of its rights under the UN-set 200-mile exclusive economic zone, because what it has are “historic rights” dating to centuries back.
