MANILA – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is optimistic that China will ensure the safety of Filipino workers deployed there despite the ongoing territorial dispute between the two countries.

"I think they will do their best to protect and ensure the personal safety of our Filipinos there," said DFA spokesperson, Assistant Secretary Charles Jose.

Jose told ANC's Headstart that it is the responsibility of the Chinese government to provide protection to all foreign workers in China, including Filipinos.

"All over China there should be about more than 200,000 Filipinos including about 180,000 in Hong Kong," he said.

The Philippines has filed an arbitration case against China before an international tribunal over its territorial dispute with China in the West Philippine Sea.

"What we are looking for is an improvement or a betterment of the situation," he said.
