MANILA, Philippines – Another Filipina was reportedly arrested for attempting to smuggle heroin into Indonesia, barely a week after 3 Filipinos were executed for drug trafficking charges in China.
According to a report received by ABS-CBN News, the Pinay identified as Cherry Ann Panaligan was apprehended at Adisumarmo International Airport in Central Java last April 3, 2011.
Panaligan was caught carrying 1.1 kilos of heroin which was placed inside her suitcase.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is concerned that many Filipinos are still used as drug mules by drug trafficking syndicates.
"Nakakalungkot na may ganitong insidente pa din, kahit na may tatlo na sa ating mga kababayan na nabitay sa Tsina," said DFA Spokesman Ed Malaya.
Investigation conducted by the Indonesian Customs Narcotics revealed that the heroin was given to Panaligan by a Filipino from Malaysia. She was supposed to smuggle the drugs into Indonesia in exchange for US$800.
"Mukha yatang ang iba sa ating mga kababayan ay hindi na natututo," added Malaya.
Panaligan is the 8th Filipino drug mule jailed in Indonesia. Jay Ruiz, ABS-CBN News
